VOGUE - Boys will be Girls

Boys Will Be Girls

KATIE GRAND announced herself as the key protagonist in fashion's current gender-bending moment when she unveiled the latest androgyny-themed issue of Love magazine. With covers featuring Kate Moss kissing transsexual model Lea T, and pop superstar Justin Bieber, the issue has raised quite a few gender questions - as well as the odd eyebrow.
"It's been really interesting to work with the people we have on this issue," Grand told us. "I wanted to work with transsexuals but to do something very glamorous and decadent - full of fashion. We have interviewed Riccardo Tisciand Marc Jacobs - both of whom have a huge interest in transsexuals and cross-dressing."
Marc Jacobs hit the headlines in December, 2010, when he chose male model Andrej Pejic for his spring/summer 2011 campaign. Pejic has modelled both men's and womenswear but, rather than being a transsexual, Pejic has been labelled a "femiman" - simply a man with feminine qualities.
"Andrej Pejic is part of the new femiman trend in fashion. He's one of a new breed of androgynous models who have risen to prominence in the past few seasons," a spokesperson for Storm - Pejic's agency - told us. "These boys are beautiful, but Andrej isn't just a pretty face or a fleeting fancy. He has a great look for sure, but those who know him love his icy wit and irreverent humour. He's at the forefront of a new gender fluidity in fashion, in which traditional male and female attitudes are less relevant. It's a message that is being embraced by the most prestigious brands in the fashion industry and which seasoned consumers are loving."
