A recent interactive article on style.com showed a growing trend of girls dressing as boys. There is an obvious focus on the suit, but even hair cuts are adding to a more masculine look (the undercut, shaving all the hair off). Although one could push this into the "androgyny" folder, it is interesting that now we are seeing men modeling womenswear, women want to dress in a more masculine fashion.
It could be suggested that cross dressing and sharing fashions was offered to women with the invention of the trouser in womenswear by Chanel and later Yves Saint Laurent. Secondly to this, power dressing in the 1980's pushed upon the importance of a woman's suit, as she battled against male prejudice and social expectations. Also during the 1980's, was the further freedom of the teenager, and the impulse to always stand out and be different. Club culture was on the way up, and the more daring you were the better. Men dressing in womenswear was the quickest way to achieve this; with no shame attached. Previously there may have been men who enjoyed dressing as women, but were forced to keep this impulse inside of them as to keep in line with social codes. However, the 1980's was the explosion of 'mainstream' cross dressing and gender bending. David Bowie for example; his stage costumes were the ultimate male androgyny.
